Are Hang-Ups Holding You Back?

I [Paul] thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you.… Be eager to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues.

1 CORINTHIANS 14:18,39

It’s true that this matter of speaking in tongues has become for many Christians a doctrinal bone of contention. The practice seems so bizarre and illogical to some that they find it hard to accept, even when they read it in the Bible. Yet God has ways of bringing special circumstances into people’s lives to bring them to a place of acceptance.

Fran and Mike are longtime friends of mine (Quin’s) who were led to the Lord by the Dutch evangelist Corrie ten Boom. For several years, Corrie and her traveling companion spent many restful holidays in Fran and Mike’s home.

On one occasion, they visited Corrie at a Christian camp where she was speaking. As Corrie and Fran were taking a walk one afternoon, Corrie said, “Frances, would you like me to pray for Jesus to baptize you in the Holy Spirit?”

“Yes, I would,” Fran replied.

They stopped on the path, and then Corrie laid hands on her and prayed for the Lord Jesus to baptize her with the Holy Spirit. “Fran, now you can pray in tongues, if you wish,” Corrie said.

Fran studied her friend’s beautiful wrinkled face, then, shaking her head, replied, “I don’t wish to.” They finished their walk, returned to the camp dormitory, and Corrie never mentioned the matter of tongues to Fran again.

“The idea of speaking in tongues scared me,” Fran later told me. “I was afraid of losing control of my own tongue after a lifetime of being taught to be careful of what I say. The idea of someone else speaking through me was frightening. Also, I didn’t have a scriptural understanding of tongues. But Corrie never pressured me. Because I didn’t ‘feel’ anything when she prayed, nor immediately thereafter see any significant change in my life, I wasn’t really sure whether I had been baptized in the Holy Spirit or not.”
